Shotel, Sickle Sword of Ethiopia - 6669


The Shotel is the traditional sword of the Abyssinian (Ethiopia). It looks like a huge sickle, with a long blade deeply curved almost to half circle. The purpose of this very awkward blade is to strike over or around the shield of an opponent. It is 30 Inches long, (point to point) with two fullers and a central rib on the entire length of the blade. The hilt is wood with an engraved brass cap on the pommel. Total length 35 inches. All parts are original and dated to the late 19th C. Good condition.. An age crack and chips chip to the wood grip. No scabbard.
