Good Persian Jambiya with Carved Walrus Hilt - 6661

A very good example of an 18th C. Persian Jambiya. The 9 ½ inches curved blade is beautifully forged with a central rib, most probably from Persian wootz (Damascus) steel. The hilt is a solid piece of walrus Ivory. Classical ‘I’ shape and carved on both faces with a male and female human figures probably the king and queen and with Arabic inscription on the cross guard and pommel parts of the grip. A later silver cap was added to the pommel. The scabbard is wood covered with black leather and bras tip. Good plus condition. The grip carving is slightly worn but has a nice age patina and only few age cracks. There is some age shrinkage to the leather cover of the scabbard and damaged areas at the top and near the tip. All together a very impressive item. |
