Balkan Yatagan Sword dated 1867 - 6533

A nice example of a classical “YATAGAN” from the Balkan. The Yatagan derives its shape from very old blades. Its peculiar shaped blade has a down curving blade with reinforced spine, and it is found in many weapons in the eastern world from the West Balkan countries to the far Indian sub-continent. Its eared pommel shape is known from very old days and similar pommels were found in swords from Luristan 3000 years ago. This specific example is of Balkan origin, has a 25 inches long blade decorated with silver koftgari decoration and dated to 1284 (1867). The grips with the side ears are carved from walrus ivory. The grip strap and the blade collar fittings are made of brass with filigree work. Good condition. The grips are unfortunately cracked but hold very solid. No scabbard.
