Shotel, Sickle Sword of Ethiopia - 6439


The Shotel is the traditional sword of the Abyssinian (Ethiopia). It looks like a huge sickle, with a long blade deeply curved almost to half circle. The purpose of this very awkward blade is to strike over or around the shield of an opponent. It is 28 Inches long, (point to point) with two fullers and a central rib on the entire length of the blade. The hilt is wood with a steel cap on the pommel. Total length 33 inches. All parts are original and dated to the late 19th C. Fair condition. Some pitted areas and a minor forging flaw at the blade. A chip to the wood grip. No scabbard.
