Superb Whole Steel Indian ANKUS (Elephant Goad) - 6271

This is an Indian ANKUS, (Elephant Goad), used by the Indian to guide their elephants. Although it is not a pure weapon, it is always attached in Museum and private collections to Indian arms and armor. It also finds extended use as a ceremonial item displayed in parades and other important events. This one is a high quality one, made entirely of steel, 22 ½ inches long with hollow haft. 6 steel bells within the haft are free to move and ring when the ankus is in use. This item is an original unusual piece, dated probably to the first half of the 19th C. and a very interesting addition to any Indian art / or edged weapon collection.
