Rare Brass Shield of the Ache Sumatra - 6378

The Ache people of Central Sumatra are carrying this small round hand shield (or Buckler) made of brass which is also locally known as .Peurise Teumaga. It is 9 inches in diameter, made of cast brass and decorated with seven brass bosses and seven points stars, and central turned concentric circles. Similar shields are shown in A.G. Van Zonneveld Traditional Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago p. 106, Figs. 417-420. This is an authentic, very early 20 C. piece in very good condition. The rear handle is missing and there is a small cast crack in the brass near the edge. Very reasonable price for this rare piece. |
