Fine 18 C. Yatagan Sword, Silver Inlay Decoration - 6374

We offer for sale this unusual fine Yatagan with an 18 C. blade highly and richly decorated with silver wire inlay. The real inlay work is done by cutting grooves into the steel and hammering a silver wire into the groove (see close-up photos), in contrary to the later Koftgari decoration employing superficial hammering of silver into the scratched steel surface. This unusual blade is straight and not curved like the common Yatagans. It is 22 inches long, inlaid with silver wire on it entire surfaces both sides in floral design and Arabic inscriptions. Although the blade is not dated, the silver inlay work is of the second half of the 18 C. The grips are huge, 4 ½ inches tip to tip carved from single massive pieces of Walrus ivory. The grip strap and bolster are gilded silver in filigree work and set with very big carved Coral pieces. Total length 28 ½ inches. A very impressive item in good condition. Few pitted spots on the blade and age hair thin cracks on the Ivory. More than 95% of the silver inlay is intact. No scabbard. |
