The Shi people residing in east Zaire, near the Tanzania border carries this typical unique sword with straight, double edge blade. This one is a very good exemplar. Slender blade 22 1/2 inches long with a central "step" ridge. Hardwood handle and scabbard densely carved with a geometric design on the front face and bound with bands of thin steel wires. Total length 29 inches. Very good condition. Minor losses to the wire binding. Early 20C.
