A Coral and Turquoise Inlaid Ottoman Kilij Sword Tabarzon - 12204


Here we offer a very attractive coral and Turquoise inlaid kilij sword . The Kilij is the traditional saber of the Ottomans. It was in use from the early 16 C. and during more than 500 years well into the 20th C. The shorter version with deeply curved wide blade and ‘T’ spine, sometime known as Pala, is a later version and appeared in the mid 18 Century. This example with curved single-edged blade widening towards point with double-edged end , with gold overlay inscription , hilt with curved pommel and quillons with lozenge shaped coral and smaller rounded turquoise inset decoration set within wire borders, with large turquoise inset stones with engraved floral sprays at base of hilt and on pommel, scabbard with similar inlaid coral and turquoise decoration arranged around floral engraved turquoise stones and punctuated with further smaller turquoises, the back with repoussé floral , two suspension rings attached to fittings on scabbard. very minor losses to coral inset and one large turquoise missing from scabbard.
