Very Fine Axe of the Mangbetu with Ivory Grip - 12040

The knife of the Mangbetu people residing in Central Africa was originally used as a weapon of war and also as an agricultural implement, but later on developed into luxury item and a symbol of status. This one is a fine late 19 C. large exemplar, with a sickle shaped. 11 ½ inches (point to point) blade, very well forged. Massive one piece ivory grips. Total length 16 ½ inches. Very good condition. Very good age patina on the blade and very good yellowish age patina on the handle. A fine early impressive and authentic piece.
