Rare Buckler / Hand Shield from the Horn of Africa - 11987

This is a Buckler (hand shield) from the horn of Africa. It is 9 ½ inches in diameter, 4 ½ inches in height, made from a thick hide of the Hippopotamus . In this thickness it is believed it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. This buckler is fitted with two heavy silver coins and a chased silver cap (very rare). Very good condition. The silver coins are somewhat worn from use. We believe the coins to be Maria Theresa Thalers, mid 19C. mint, a common trading coin and decorative addition to artifact in this part of the world. These type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way from Africa through Zanzibar to Oman, therefore they are sometimes defined as Omani Bucklers. |
