Very Old, 17-18 C. Ankus (Elephant Goad) with Ivory Grips, India - 11937

This is an Indian ANKUS, (Elephant Goad), used by the Indian to guide their elephants. Although it is not a pure weapon, it is always shown in Museum and private collection in connection to Indian arms and armor. It also finds extended use as a ceremonial item displayed in parades and other important events. This one is an early one, late 17 or early 18 C, small size but of a very good quality. 4 inches top steel blade with thickened tip and another 4 inches hook shaped blade, both perforated along the edges. The handle is mounted with ivory grips riveted to the handle tang. Total length 14 ½ inches. Very good condition. Very good age patina on both the steel and the ivory.
