Pair of Bucklers / Hand Shields from the Horn of Africa - 11935

This pair of identical Bucklers (hand shield) is coming from the horn of Africa, early – mid 20C. 7 ½ inches in diameter, 4 inches in height each, made from a thick hide of the Hippopotamus more than 1/2 inches thick. In this thickness it is believed it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. The fittings are brass. Very good condition . These type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way from Africa through Zanzibar to Oman, therefore they are sometimes defined as Omani Bucklers. |
