18 C. Persian Wootz Jambiya Dagger - 6194

A superb, very fine example of an 18th C. Persian Jambiya. The 8 inches curved blade is forged from very good Persian wootz (Damascus) steel and decorated with a gold koftgary decoration. The hilt is a solid piece of walrus Ivory. Classical ‘I’ shape cut entirely from the marble like core of the walrus tusk, and carved on both faces with two human figures, a male on the front and a female on the back side, probably the king and the queen, with Arabic inscription on the pommel and cross guard. The figures 0157 carved on the hilt just below the human figure, is probably referring to a date 1157 (1744). The scabbard is wood covered with black leather and steel tip covered with twisted silver wire. Very good condition. The grip shows an excellent age patina and only few age cracks. The silver wire on the scabbard tip is later. A real find for the collector of Islamic arms and armor. |
