Authentic Fine and Large Axe of the Mangbetu with Ivory Grip - 11539

The knife of the Mangbetu people residing in Central Africa was originally used as a weapon of war and also as an agricultural implement, but later on developed into luxury item and a symbol of status. One of the photos show a late 19 C drawing of Munza the king of the Mangbetu on his throne, holding high a similar knife as a symbol of power and authority. This one is a fine late 19 C.,with a larger than usual sickle shaped. 12 inches (point to point) blade, very well forged. The original blackening of the steel with the polishaed edges is, maintained. Massive one piece ivory grips with very good yellowish age patina. Total length 17 inches. Very good condition. A fine early and authentic piece. |
