Rare 18 C Ayda Katti Coorg Sword, India - 6148


The Ayda Katti is the national sword of the Coorg of Malabar, the South West coastal area of India. It is one of the rarest items in the Indian arsenal and of a very peculiar shape. It reminds in a way an agricultural tool, but it is a real weapon and a deadly one in the experienced hands. This one is a very old version, early 18 C. with a sickle shape blade 16 inches long and more than 3 inches wide at its widest point, with some engraved design near the blade heel. The handle is dark wood with a heavy brass bolster and the kite shaped pommel is also wood. 20 inches total length. Good plus condition. Some darkened areas on the blade and few nicks on the edge.
