Rare Buckler / Hand Shield from the Horn of Africa - 11242


This is a Buckler (hand shield) from the horn of Africa. It is 8 inches in diameter, 4 inches in height, made from a thick hide of the Hippopotamus almost ¾ inches thick . In this thickness it is believed it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. The fittings are brass. Very good condition . These type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way from Africa through Zanzibar to Oman, therefore they are sometimes defined as Omani Bucklers.
