Unusual Short Yataghan Sword with Wootz Blade - 11164

This style of short Yataghan sword is sometimes known as Marine Yataghan, probably because of its length. In contrary to more common Yataghans the blade here is straight with a pronounce T spine, forged from very good high contrast Wootz (Damascus, watered) steel. The grips are walrus ivory with very long and narrow ears. The bolsters and grip strap are silver with granulation work and traces of gold palting. The bolsters are set with drop shaped and ribbed coral stones. Original scabbard with silver locket andchape, covered with the original leather cover with spiral stitches seam. Total length 22 ½ inches. Very good condition. Minor losses to the leather cover of the scabbard. The plugged holes on the grips may indicate a secondary use and/or an early repair of the handle, which is very common in this type of weapons. |
