This is a hide shield from India, most probably from Rajasthan, early – mid 19 C. It is made from Buffalo (?) hide, 16 inches in diameter and 3 inches in height with four brass/ silver bosses. It is entirely hand painted in black, dark green red and gold colors in a very delicate design. The inner side is painted black and similar green / gold design. Very good condition to age. Age cracks to the paint mostly on the perimeter and minor hide age distortions. Damaged inner cushion and handles .
