19 C. Indo-Afghan Cobra Short Sword - 10344

This type of sword is generally referred to as Indo-Afghan, rightfully describing the mixed Indian and Afghan elements. These swords are sometimes also referred to as Cobra swords or Pahari Swords. The are characterized by the Afghan style handle and Indian straight blade bulged at the ricasso. This one is a short version of classical style: 17 ½ inches blade, widens to 2 ½ inches at its top. Steel handle. Both blade and handle are decorated with gold koftgari inscription and floral design. Wood scabbard with the original fabric cover and a silver chape. The date on the blade 1391 (corresponding to 1970 in the Gregorian calendar) is a questionable issue. This is definitely a 19 C. item and we assume that the 1391 should actually stand for 1291 ( 1874 ). Typo mistake?? Total length 22 ½ inches. Very good condition. Minor losses to the gold work. |
