Set of Three knives, Turkey. - 0662

A very fine set of three knives in one scabbard. This set is from the Ottoman period, probably Turkish early 19th Century, but could as well be from one of the neighboring Balkan countries. It incorporates three small knives (6.5 – 7 inches blade each) of a typical Turkish Kard shape fitted into one silver scabbard. All the blades forged from good quality watered steel (wootz) and decorated with gold koftgary floral design and Arabic inscription on the blade base. All three hilts are identical and made from engraved and chased white metal. The bolsters are made from engraved brass (typical Turkish) and the scabbard made of engraved and chased silver, set with corals and turquoise stones. The engraved design on the hilts is the same as on the scabbard. The workmanship of both is of the same quality. Thus, we assume that the hilts and the scabbard are both original and made to fit each other. Yet the maker preferred to fit these top quality blades and silver scabbard with somewhat ‘cheap’ metal for the hilt. I wonder why.
