Superb Klewang from Sumatra - 5993

A very good and rare Klewang, one of the many variations of the Indonesian machete like knife. This one is probably Acehnese from Sumatra, the second half of the 19th C. The blade is straight and single edge, 23 inches long with two narrow fuller along its entire length. The steel bolster is forged in a polygonal shape. The hilt is carved of black horn in a typical forked pommel and beautifully carved all around. The grip collar is Sawossa (gold/copper alloy). The scabbard is made of dark wood bound with silver bands, and with a big ivory chape (scabbard mouth), beautifully engraved and painted black within the engraving. Total length is 30 inches. Very good condition. Only few and minor pitted areas on the blade, near its tip. The horn grip and the Ivory pommel has age cracks (partially re-glued) but it is strong and solid. Two silver bands from the scabbard are missing, and the upper band is a recent one. These klewangs with the ivory mouth are quite rare and hard to find in such a good condition, and every collector of Indonesian weapons / art should love to add it to his collection.
