Very Good MANDAU, Sword of the Dyak Head Hunters, Borneo - 9309

This MANDAU (sometimes also called “Parang Ihlang”) is a late 19 to early 20 C vintage with a 21 inches blade with curved cross section. The blade is inlaid with brass inserts along the spine and on its base. The handle is “L” shaped, carved from bone and bound with braided copper wires, with tufts of black hair on the pommel tips. Wood scabbard bound with rattan strips in a decorative pattern and painted black, and with a braided rattan belt. This Mandau comes with the (Piso Raout) , an accessory knife mounted in a rear compartment made of wood bark. Long wood handle with bone tip. Tufts of red, bkack and white hair are bound to the rear part of the scabbard. Total length 29 inch. Very good condition. Minor losses to the rattan binding of the scabbard. An original authentic piece for real use. |
