Buckler from the Horn of Africa - 5944

This is a Buckler (hand shield) from the horn of Africa. It is 10 inches in diameter, 8 inches in height and it is made from the hide of the Hippopotamus. It is more than 5/8 inches thick and so though that it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. The attached fittings are silver. These type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way through Zanzibar to Oman. |
