Very Good Wootz Karud Dagger with Rhino Horn Hilt. Bukhara - 9332

This Karud dagger is the straight back member of the family of the Pesh-Kabz, Choora and Khyber Knife. The whole family of such daggers is common to India, Persia and several Central Asian countries. The blade is forged from beautiful high contrast wootz (Damascus) steel, 9 1/2 inches long, heavy, with a pronounced T spine tapering to an acute tip. The grips are made from massive slabs of Rhino horn with clear fibrous structure, cut axially to the horn. The grip strap and the bolsters are steel covered with chased silver strips. Original scabbard covered with red fabric, long faceted steel chape and (later) leather locket. Total length 17 inches. Very good condition. Minor pitted spots on the blade and horn chips on the handle. This very typical way of axially cutting the rhino horn grips suggests a Bukhara origin. |
