Indonesian Short Sword TJIKEROEH - 5916

This is a very interesting short sword from Indonesia. It was made in the village of TJIBATOE ( CNIBATU in the modern Indonesian spelling). During the end of the 19th and toward the very early 20th Century, this village was famous in the production of edged weapons of various shapes, mainly Goloks. Many blades were done as a special order for foreigners, mainly Dutch people residing in Indonesia. This one here is an excellent example of a mix of Indonesian and western styles. The blade reminds that of a big Bowie knife, heavy, 17 inches long with a clipped tip. The name TJIBATO is inlaid in brass onto the blade. In contrary to the European Bowie style blade, both the black horn hilt and the wood scabbard are of typical Javanese style. The wood scabbard has a black horn mouth and tip and black horn belt attachment loop and it is reinforced with bands of light colored horn. Excellent condition. |
