Fine Turkish Yataghan Sword with Damascus Blade, Dated 1823 - 8875

A fine and interesting example of the “YATAGAN”, the famous Ottoman sword. This specific example is dated to 1239 (1823 in the Gregorian calendar), probably of Turkish origin. It has a 26 1/2 inches blade forged from superb pattern welded (Damascus) steel in the pattern known as Turkish Ribbon achieved by forge welding of several twisted steel rods to one ingot. This pattern was common to Ottoman blades as from the 17C. The silver grips and bolsters are finely decorated with niello design. Total length 29 inches very good condition. Minor scratches on the blade. Cracks and repairs on the silver pommel. No scabbard. |
