Early South Indian Heavy Sword - 8874

This heavy sword is south Indian with an early blade, probably 18 C. down curving blade 35 inches long. It is widest 3 1/2 inches at its base, narrowing to 1 inch at its center and widening again to 2 inches toward the tip. The spine is sharpened to form a 14 inches back edge. The blade is well forged from laminated steel. The hilt is later, probably mid 19 C., composed of a wide four lobed cross guard with traces of silver koftgari work, rim decorated with brass strip and fabric cushion on the inner side. Cylindrical grip bound with silver based thread and a disk shaped pommel. Total length 41 inches. Very good condition. The pommel disk, the grip binding and the hand cushion are restored. The silver koftgari work is mostly gone. A big and very impressive sword.
