Very Fine Short Sword from Java (TJIKOREH), Dated 1887 - 8841

This is a very interesting short sword from Indonesia. It was made in the village of TJIKOREH ( CHIKOREA in the modern Indonesian spelling). During the end of the 19th and toward the very early 20th Century, this village was famous in the production of edged weapons of various shapes. Many blades were done as a special order for foreigners, mainly Dutch people residing in Indonesia. This one here is an excellent example of a mix of Indonesian, western and Japanese styles. The blade, may be a cut down military sword is very finely etched and engraved, signed TJIKOREH and dated to 1887. The blade tip is cut and shaped like the tip of a Japanese sword. Blade length 17 1/2 inches. Finely carved woof handle with a bird of pray pommel end. Finely carved wood scabbard. Total length 26 inches. Very good condition. Minor wood chip and a crack at the top mouth of the scabbard. |
