17 C Mail and Plate Armor Shirt, India - 8595

We offer for sale this 17 C. mail and plates armor shirt from India. The Devanagri script on the breast plates is probably stating that this shirt is from Bikaner and is one of those captured at the siege of Adoni in 1689, when Maharajah Anup Singh of Bikaner defeated the Adilshahi dynasty from Bijapur. The shirt is therefore Mughal in origin and was probably manufactured in Bijapur some time earlier in the 17th century. The shirt is composed of many thousands of separate rings each one interlaced with four other rings and each one individually riveted. 32 inches tall and 55 inches wide with sleeves fully stretched. The shirt has two chest plates with buckles, four side plates and three rows of scales on the back. Three of the breast plate are inscribed both outside and inside with Arabic as well as Devanagri letters as stated above. Very good condition. Very few missing rings. Some old repairs on the plates on the inner side. A rare piece in very good condition. |
