Unusual Turkish / East European (??) Yataghan sword - 8451

East Europe or Turkey ?? The spread of the Yataghan sword over so many territories and the huge variety in shape, size and decoration is a fascinating issue. Here we offer for sale a very unusual exemplar: Straight blade, finely engraved and marked on the spine, 22 1/2 inches long. Horn handle with silver fittings. Leather scabbard. Total length 29 inches. Very good condition. Leather very lightly worn. The engraving is of classical east European style with the exception of an engraved head wearing a Turkish (?) turban. Is this a Turkish made sword for the European market?? A European blade made for the Turkish market?? We are not sure. Our guess is a East European sword decorated in a way to give it a Turkish flavor, but any other guess is as good. A very similar sword is exhibited in the Historical museum of Wien, Austria, defined as a Turkish sword with a European made blade. |
