Fine Early 18 C. Balkan Yataghan Sword Dated 1786 - 8424


Up for sale is this fine quality Yataghan, probably from the Balkan with its blade dated to 1201 in the Islamic calendar (1786 in the Gregorian calendar). The down curving blade is 21 inches long. It is decorated with silver inlay work (true inlay) with Turkish inscription and dated. The inscription reads (in free translation): Oh God, open your door of generosity in favor and virtue. Let all the wishes of the owner of this knife be fulfilled in both worlds. (Translation courtesy of Mr. Horoz). The other decorative cartouche reads: The work of Mohammad the onwer Osman 1201 The handle is composed of gilded grip strap and big chased silver grips. The scabbard is mounted with two big locket and chape, also made from chased gilded silver. Total length 28 inches. Very good condition. Minor blackening with very shallow pitting near the blade tip. The grips went through several repair processes in different times. A very fine and impressive sword.
