Rare Ceremonial Copper Axe of the Songye People, Africa - 8329

The Songye people reside in central Zaire and are known to be masters in metal work. The chiefs of the Songye families carry a ceremonial axe made of steel or copper, the copper ones being quite rare and sought after. Here we offer for sale a nice example of these copper made ceremonial axes. 8 ˝ X 7 inches blade, with a human face hammered in its center, and with dots and short lines punched into the copper. The haft is wood, entirely covered with a thin sheet of copper. Total length 18 inches. Very good condition. Good age patina. Some dents on the handle’s copper cover. A rare piece.
