Buckler / Hand Shield from the Horn of Africa - 8328

This is a Buckler (hand shield) from the horn of Africa. It is 9 ½ inches in diameter, 6 inches in height. It is made from a thick hide of the Hippopotamus almost 3 / 4 inches thick and in this thickness it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. The fittings are brass. Very good condition . Minor distortions due to age shrink of the hide. These type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way from Africa through Zanzibar to Oman. |
