Big and Rare Rattan Shield of the Ache, Sumatara - 8212


The Ache people of Central Sumatra are carrying this shield which is also locally known as Peurise Awe. It is a very big exemplar 18 inches in diameter, compared to the more common buckler size 13-15 inches. It is made of spiral cane densely braided with Rattan fibers and decorated with engraved and pierced nine pointed brass stars, 8 around and a big central one. Very good condition. Minor dammge to the rattan binding at the rim. An authentic late 19 or very early 20 C. piece.
