We offer here a very rare shield of the Tanala people from Madagascar. Oval shaped 20x16 1/2 inches, 2 inches height, with the handle integrally carved from the same piece of wood. The front side of the shield is covered with animal hide attached to the shield with wood nails at the back side. It has an old German label attached to the back side of the shield saying: ...ICHEN, A Schaffenburg. A similar example is known from the Barbier-Muller collection.
