Good Old Kastane Sword Dated 1775, Sri-Lanka - 8119

The Kastane is the national sword of Sri-Lanka. It is characterized by its short curved blade, usually of mediocre quality and highly decorative hilt and scabbard. Here we have a very good 18 C. example with 24 inches blade of good steel. The blade is stamped with the VOC, for "Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie" (Dutch East India Co.) and dated 1775. The hilt is a beautiful combination of chiseled brass and steel with horn grip and brass pommel. All the hilt parts are of great decorative values – A piece of art by itself. The monster styled quillons, the engraved D guard and grips and the monster head pommel with all parts delicately chiseled with great care and fine details. Very good condition to age. Age patina on the blade. A minor chip to the horn grip. No scabbard. An unusually decorative piece from the late 18 C. at a very attractive price.
