19 C. Indian Heavy Knife for the European Market - 8073

As from the last quarter of the 19 C, around 1880, the European market for decorative arts from the east was rapidly growing. To satisfy this grow, many Indian weapons were produced to meet this market demands. They are mostly characterized by the good quality blades of high Carbon steel and Jade (actually Jadeite) and Mother of Pearl handles of generally very good workmanship. This style of handles was implemented to many classical Indian blades: Pesh-Kabz, Kards, Khukuries and even Tulwar blades. Here we have a classical example of an Indian heavy knife, 13 inches lblade, deadly sharp with a slightly up-curving spine. The handle grips are made of mosaic of Mother of Pearl pieces with Jadeite pommel and collar. The D guard is of a classical European style. The scabbard is covered with velvet and fitted with silver mounts. The scabbard mouth is also mounted with a spring latch to hold the blade firmly in the scabbard. Total length 17 inches. Very good condition. This is NOT a tourist item, but a good weapon with an interesting mix of styles.
