Buckler / Hand Shield from the Horn of Africa - 7792

This is a Buckler (hand shield) from the horn of Africa. It is 9 inches in diameter, 7 inches in height ( taller than the 5 inches usual shields) and it is made from the hide of the Hippopotamus. It is 1/2 inches thick and in this thickness it is believed it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. The cross shaped mounts are brass. Very good condition . Minor distortion to hide in the shield perimeter. These type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way from Africa through Zanzibar to Oman. |
