Early Indian Hide Shield, Hand Painted - 7762

This is a hide shield from India. It is made from light colored hide, may be Rhino hide, 19 inches in diameter and 2 ¾ inches in height with four brass bosses. It is entirely hand painted in black, gold, brown green and yellow colors, with a central and one and four other medallions depicting hunting scenes: Lions and tigers hunting antelopes. The inner side is painted black. Original inner hand cushion made from red fabric. Very good condition, Some age cracks to the paint. Minor damages to the hide edge, and a small area of missing paint inside. Inner hand strips are missing. A fine elegant piece, late 18 or early 19 C. vintage. |
