Eben a Royal Sword from Benin - 7752


Eben is the name of this ceremonial sword from the royal court of the kingdom of Benin, the dominant power in the rain forests of West Africa (Nigeria today), from the 17 and until the end of the 19 Century. This sword was carried in front of Chieftains of the Kingdom as a sign of power and authority. This exemplar has a leaf shaped blade 20 inches long and 8 inches wide, artistically perforated. The grip id covered with bone pieces and the huge ring shaped pommel is made of twisted iron, 5 inches wide. Total length 31 inches. Very good condition. This sword is coming from a private collection, and an old label on the blade indicate that it was added to the collection in 1994. A rare authentic piece.
