Ceremonial Sword from Dahomey - West Africa - 7649

Swords like this one were carried by high ranking officers of the Dahomean military forces. It is known from the late 18 C. but this one is probably early 20 C. vintage. It is ceremonial in nature and not a fighting weapon. The lion shape cut on the blade is a symbol of the royal family. The handle shaped also like a lion head. Blade length 19 inches, total 27 ½ inches. Very good condition.
