Yatagan with Damascus Blade - 5731

A very fine and interesting example of the “YATAGAN”, the famous Ottoman sword. The Yatagan derives its shape from very old blades. Its peculiar shaped blade has a down curving blade with reinforced spine, and it is found in many weapons in the eastern world from the West Balkan countries to the far Indian sub-continent. Its eared pommel shape is known from very old days and similar pommels were found in swords from Luristan 3000 years ago. This specific example has a 22’’ long blade widening to more than 2 inches at the widest point – 6 inches from the tip. The blade is entirely forged from superb pattern welded (Damascus) steel in the pattern common to blades of the 18-19 C. in the Ottoman Empire. The black horn grips with the side ears are mounted on the blade tang with six silver rosettes (one missing). The grip strap and the blade fittings are engraved silver. There is no scabbard. Very good plus condition, only minor pitted spots near the tip. All parts are original, late 18 or early 19 century, no added or restored parts. A very nice example that will be highly appreciated by the connoisseur collector.
