Very Fine Persian / Arab Wootz (Damascus) Shamshir Sword - 7337


A Shamshir, the Eastern saber that for centuries enchanted the world and was copied in practically all armies of the western world. A light. Deeply curved, wedge shape blade of minimal and simple design and yet a lethal slashing weapon in the experienced hand. Here we offer for sale a fine example: An 18 C. Persian blade, 33 inches long, forged from watered steel (Wootz, Damascus) clearly evident on the entire blade length and marked with the maker sign and the Persian lion, both were inlaid with gold which is now mostly worn. Steel cross guard, black horn grips bound with twisted brass wire and engraved brass grip strap and long down curving brass pommel. The horn grips of almost rectangular cross section, the brass wire binding and the engraved brass grip strap and pommel cap are attributed to a later, may be 19 C. Arab mounting, Syrian or Arabian. Total length 37 inches. Very good condition. No scabbard.
