Balkan Yatagan Sword with Walrus Hilt, 1795 - 5742

A nice example of a classical “YATAGAN” from the Balakn. The Yatagan derives its shape from very old blades. Its peculiar shaped blade has a down curving blade with reinforced spine, and it is found in many weapons in the eastern world from the West Balkan countries to the far Indian sub-continent. Its eared pommel shape is known from very old days and similar pommels were found in swords from Luristan 3000 years ago. This specific example is of Balkan origin, has a 24 ˝ inches long blade most probably forged from laminated steel entierly inlaid with silver decpration on both faces and dated to 1210 (1795). The grips with the side ears are carved from walrus ivory. The grip strap and the blade collar fittings are made of gilded filigree copper work set with corals and other red colored stones. The scabbard is wood covered with brown tooled leather and with steel fittings. Good plus condition. Nice patina to the blade which unfortunately has seen battles which left very few swords scars on the edge. More than 95% of the silver inlay is intact. One of the grips is unfortunately cracked but hold solid. The grip strap and the blade collar has suffered some cracks and were attempted repairs in several points with soft solder. The scabbard steel tip is a later addition, probably to replace a lost one, and the leather has suffered some age shrinkage, and a small one inch size piece is missing near the chape. A nice example.
