Buckler / Hand Shield from the Horn of Africa - 7159


This is a Buckler (hand shield) from the horn of Africa. It is 10 inches in diameter, 5 inches in height and it is made from the hide of the Hippopotamus. It is 1/2 inches thick and in this thickness it is believed it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. The attached fittings are brass mounted with small red stones. Very good condition . Minor distortion to hide in the shield perimeter and one of the metal fitting is partially broken. These type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way from Africa through Zanzibar to Oman.
