Ula, the Throwing Club from the Fiji Island - 6954

The Ula or Ulu is a throwing club from the Fiji Islands. It is carved from the root stem of a local bush, and it is extremely hard. The head is of ball shape 3 1/2 inches but irregular in few places, following the root shape and decorated with a ring of inlaid Mother of pearl pieces at its base, just around the stem. The handle is 13 inches long and carved in a Zig-Zag design at its base. The lower side of the stem is also inlaid. Total length 16 ½ inches. Very good condition. Very good age patina. A very similar club is shown in L. A. D. Montague, Weapons and Implements of Savage Races Page 87, Fig 48 # 1. A very good find for the collector of tribal art. |
