Hide Shield from the Horn of Africa - 6945


This is a Buckler (hand shield) from the horn of Africa. It is 10 inches in diameter, 4 inches in height and it is made from the hide of the Hippopotamus. It is more than 1/2 inches thick and in this thickness it is believed it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. The attached fittings are brass (one missing). Very good condition with minor damages to the hide in the shield perimeter. These type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way from Africa through Zanzibar to Oman.
