Good Ottoman Turkish Yatagan, Damascus Blade - 6817

A very fine and interesting example of the “YATAGAN”, the famous Ottoman sword. The Yatagan derives its shape from very old blades. Its peculiar shaped blade has a down curving blade with reinforced spine, and it is found in many weapons in the eastern world from the West Balkan countries to the far Indian sub-continent. Its eared pommel shape is known from very old days and similar pommels were found in swords from Luristan 3000 years ago. This specific example is an early 19 C. item, probably of Turkish origin. It has a 26 inches long down curving blade with thickened spine. The blade is forged from superb pattern welded (Damascus) steel in the pattern known as Turkish Ribbon which was common to Ottoman blades as from the 17C. The grips are black horn and the grip strap and the blade collar are silver. Total length 32 inches wood scabbard covered with dark blue velevt (recent) and mounted with metal locket and silver tip styled like a fish head. Very good condition. A very nice example that will be highly appreciated by the connoisseur collector, offered here at a very reasonable price. |
