Rare Panabas Sword - Philippines - 5670

The ‘Panabas’ is a long, heavy, two handed jungle knife, used by the Moro’s of the Philippines and supposedly was used also for execution. The blade comes in various shapes, this one considered as being the rarest form of all (See also: Robert Cato, Moro Swords fig. 55 ). The massive blade is 20 ½ inches long, up-curving with the edge on the down facing side. The grip is hardwood, 18 inches long, bound with four steel rings and a braided rattan band. Only one braided rattan band is probably missing from the handle tip, but otherwise in an excellent condition. A very rare item, highly sought after by collectors of Filipino weapons.
